Some
people say that The Beatles (also known as The White Album
because of its white cover) would have worked better as
a single album than a double. Strictly speaking, they might
be right. But then think about all the excellent songs we
would have missed out on! As Paul McCartney once said: "It's
a great album." Despite the vast amount of tracks, there
are hardly any 'fillers' here - it's a very high standard
throughout. Paul McCartney is full of rocking energy in
Back in the U.S.S.R.
and Helter Skelter,
but shows his more mellow side in Martha
My Dear and Mother's
Nature Son. John Lennon sings to his late mother in
the touching Julia ("Half
of all the words I say are meaningless,") and points out
a thing or two in Revolution
("Well you know, we all want to change the world.") George
Harrison is on form too, While
My Guitar Gently Weeps has become a rock classic, but
the lesser known Savoy
Truffle, the short but pretty Long,
Long, Long and the humoristic Piggies
and are excellent contributions too. Ringo Starr sings brilliantly
on the album closer Good
Night.
