Paul McCartney
said in an interview with Playboy in 1984 that the chords
to You Won't See Me were taken from It's The Same Old Song
by the Motown-group Four Tops, which was a hit in 1965.
It was also influenced by the song I Can't Help Myself,
also recorded by Four Tops.
You Won't
See Me was recorded in two takes during a marathon recording
session that lasted 13 hours without a break, and that didn't
finish before 7am. The Beatles were under immense pressure
to finish Rubber Soul, and this was the last day of recording
before the final mixing. On this day the group also worked
on the tracks The
Word, Girl,
Wait and
I'm
Looking Through You.
You Won't
See Me is likely to be about the Paul's relationship with
Jane Asher, who at the time was playing in Great Expectations
at the Theatre Royal in Bristol. Could it be that she didn't
have time for Paul between the shows? It was nevertheless
widely reported that the relationship between Paul and Jane
was in crisis at this stage.
According
to the record sleeve, You Won't See Me featured Mal Evans
on the Hammond organ, but this must have been edited out
during the final mixing.
John Lennon
didn't play any instruments on You Won't See Me, but he
helped out with the vocals.
You
Won't See Me
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
When I
call you up
Your line's engaged
I have had enough
So act your age
We have lost the time
that was so hard to find
And I will lose my mind
If you won't see me
you won't see me
I don't
know why
you should want to hide
But I can't get through
My hands are tied
I won't want to stay
I don't gave much to say
But I can't turn away
And you won't see me
you won't see me
Time after
time
You refuse to even listen
I wouldn't mind
If I knew what I was missing
Though
the days are few
They're filled with tears
And since I lost you
It feels like years
Yes, it seems so long
Girl, since you've been gone
And I just can't go on
If you won't see me
you won't see me
Time after
time
You refuse to even listen
I wouldn't mind
If I knew what I was missing
Though
the days are few
They're filled with tears
And since I lost you
It feels like years
Yes, it seems so long
Girl, since you've been gone
And I just can't go on
If you won't see me
you won't see me
