The Beatles met Bob Dylan for the first time in New York during their 1964 US tour. John Lennon was in particular inspired by this American (then) folk singer, both musically and lyrically. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away is a direct result of Dylan's influence on Lennon. In fact it's not hard to imagine Dylan singing the song instead of Lennon!

The song may have been about the Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, who was a homosexual (Epstein died of a drug overdose on August 27 1967, some claim it was suicide.)

This recording was the first time the Beatles used a session musician (with the exception of Love Me Do, on which Andy White plays drums.)

Johnnie Scott plays flutes on the song, but he was not credited on the record. Scott, who also was a musical arranger, working with such artists as Cilla Black, later said in Mark Lewisohn's book The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions:

"They told me roughly what they wanted, 3/4 time, and the best way of fulfilling their needs was to play both tenor flute and alto flute, the second as an overdub. As I recall, all four of them were there and Ringo was full of maritial joys, he'd just come back from his honeymoon." (Ringo married Maureen Cox on February 11)

Lennon's childhood friend Pete Shotton was in the studio with the Beatles during the recording of the song, and apparently added some 'heys' to the chorus.

In true Dylan-style (at the time), no electric instruments were used on the recording of You've Got To Hide Your Love Away.

You've Got To Hide Your Love Away

(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)

Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
If she's gone I can't go on
Feeling two foot small
Everywhere people stare
each and every day
I can see them laugh at me
And I hear them say

Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away

How can I even try?
I can never win
Hearing them, seeing them
In the state I'm in
How could she say to me
"Love will find a way?"
Gather round all you clowns
Let me hear you say

Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away
