Ringo
was usually given one song to sing for each album, and once
again the choice fell on a country and western song. On
The Beatles previous album, Help!,
Ringo sang the humoristic Act Naturally. On Rubber Soul
he followed up the country theme with What Goes On.
What Goes
On was originally scheduled for recording on March 5 1963,
the same day as From
Me To You was recorded. However, the Beatles ran out
of time and the song was later forgotten about.
This was
the first and the last time that Lennon and McCartney gave
somebody else songwriting credits for one of their compositions
(with the exception of the instrumental Flying
on Magical
Mystery Tour).
It is
however uncertain exactly what Ringo's contribution to the
song was; it is likely to have been ideas to the lyrics
and perhaps some vocal alterations. When asked about this
in 1966, Ringo said that his contribution had been "about
five words."
What Goes
On proved that the Beatles mastered the musical genre of
country and western. Just listen to George Harrison's Chet
Baker-inspired guitar playing!
What Goes
On ended up as the B-side on the American version of the
single Nowhere
Man, which was released in the US in February 1966.
What Goes On
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney/Starkey)
What goes
on in your heart
What goes on in your mind?
You are tearing me apart
When you treat me so unkind
What goes on in your mind?
The other day I saw you
As I walked along the road
But when I saw him with you
I could feel my future fold
Its so easy for a girl like you to lie
Tell my why?
What goes on in your heart
What goes on in your mind?
You are tearing me apart
When you treat me so unkind
What goes on in your mind?
I met you in the morning
Waiting for the tides of time
But now the tide is turning
I can see that I was blind
Its so easy for a girl like you to lie
Tell me why?
What goes on in your heart
I used to think of no-one else
But you were just the same
You didnt even think of me
As someone with a name
Did you mean to break my heart and watch me die
Tell me why?
What goes on in your heart
What goes on in your mind?
You are tearing me apart
When you treat me so unkind
What goes on in your mind?
