We Can Work It Out is possibly about Paul's girlfriend Jane
Asher who in October 1965 decided to move away from London
to join the Bristol Old Vic Company as an actress. Some
claim her departure upset Paul and that this was a big test
for their relationship.
Nevertheless, We Can Work illustrates that the songwriting
partnership between Lennon and McCartney was still blossoming
at this time.
Paul wrote the upbeat verse "Try to see it my way"
whereas Lennon added he the middle bridge, "Life is
very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting,
my friend." On Lennon's part, the rythm keeps changing
between a 4/4 and 3/4 (walz) beat. Lennon also played the
harmonium on this track, a Western instrument adapted for
Indian music.
We Can Work It Out was released as a single together with
Day Tripper (both A-sides on the same single) on December
6 1965. Is was a number one in the US for three weeks. In
the UK the single was released on December 3 1965. It topped
the British charts for five weeks.
We Can Work It Out
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
Try to see it my way
Do I have to keep on talking till I can't go on
While you see it your way
Run the risk of knowing that or love may soon be gone
We can work it out
We can work it out
Think
of what you're saying
You can get it wrong and still you think that it's all right
Think of what I'm saying
We can work it out and get it straight or say good night
We can work it out
We can work it out
Life is
very short and there's no time
for fussing and fighting, my friend
I have always thought that it's a crime
So I will ask you once again
Try to
see it my way
Only time will tell of I am right or I am wrong
While you see it your
There's a chance we might fall apart before too long
We can work it out
We can work it out
Life is
very short and there's no time
for fussing and fighting, my friend
I have always thought that it's a crime
So I will ask you once again
Think
of what you're saying
You can get it wrong and still you think that it's all right
Think of what I'm saying
We can work it out and get it straight or say good night
We can work it out
We can work it out
