Wait was
originally recorded for Beatles' Help!
album, but for some reason it was left out. The song was
instead completed on the last day of recording Rubber Soul.
Some argue
that the song fitted in nicely on Rubber Soul, others say
the opposite; that Wait was more suitable for the Help!
album. It is of course possible that the song was included
on Rubber Soul just because the Beatles needed to fill the
quota of 14 songs - 7 tracks on each side of the LP. But
it's just as likely that the Beatles just didn't think the
song fitted in on Help! or that they thought that they needed
to spend more time on it.
Most of
the song was already completed when the Beatles started
working on it again on November 11. All that was left to
do was to add some tone pedal guitar, tambourine, maraca
and more vocals.
As for
the lyrics, it is probably once again Paul's girlfriend
Jane Asher who is the source of inspiration.
Wait
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
Its
been a long time, now Im coming back home
Ive been away now, oh how Ive been alone
Wait till I come back to your side
Well forget the tears we cried
But if your heart breaks, dont wait, turn me away
And if your hearts strong, hold on, I wont delay
Wait till I come back to your side
Well forget the tears we cried
I feel as though you ought to know
That Ive been good, as good as I can be
And if you do, Ill trust in you
And know that you will wait for me
Its been a long time, now Im coming back home
Ive been away now, oh how Ive been alone
Wait till I come back to your side
Well forget the tears we cried
I feel as though you ought to know
That Ive been good, as good as I can be
And if you do, Ill trust in you
And know that you will wait for me
But if your heart breaks, dont wait, turn me away,
And if your hearts strong, hold on, I wont delay
Wait till I come back to your side
Well forget the tears we cried
Its been a long time, now Im coming back home
Ive been away now, oh how Ive been alone
