Twist
and Shout was first recorded by the The Top Notes in 1961,
but it was The Isley Brothers' version from 1962 that inspired
the Beatles. John Lennon sings the lead vocal on this classic,
the last to be recorded by the Beatles on THAT day of February
11 1963.
Remarkably,
the Beatles recorded the entire Please Please Me album on
this day, in one marathon session which lasted just over
nine hours. By 10pm, the band had recorded enough tracks
to fill the whole album, but producer George Martin wanted
a special album closer. With Twist And Shout, he got exactly
what he was after. John Lennon delivered the goods on the
first take, despite that he was suffering from a strong
cold.
Twist
And Shout reached number 2 on the US charts in March 1964.
In the UK, it was released as an EP in July 1963, reaching
number 4.
