George Harrison's Something is the Beatles song that's been covered the most by other artists, after Yesterday. Frank Sintra called it the "the greatest love song of the past fifty years."

Harrison was heard playing the song during the recording sessions for the The White Album in 1968, but it wasn't recorded until the Abbey Road sessions, almost a year later. He considered giving the song to Jackie Lomax, but instead he gave it to Joe Cocker, who released it as a single in November 1969. Harrison played guitar on Cocker's version.

The song is likely to be about George's wife, Patti Harrison. The opening line could have been borrowed from a James Taylor song called "Something In The Way She Moves" from 1968.

It took a while before Harrison was satisfied with the song's guitar solo. The recording was more or less completed when he asked to record the solo again. The problem was that at this stage there was only one track available on the 8 track recording machine, and this track had been reserved for the orchestrial overdub. In the end, Harrison had to play his memorable solo "live" together with the orchestra, in order to fit it all in on the only available track.

Something was released as a double A-sided single together with Come Together in October 1969. The single topped the US charts for one week, but only made it to number four in the UK.

Something

(George Harrison)

Something in the way she moves
Attracts me like no other lover
Something in the way she woos me
I don't want to leave her now
You know I believe and how

Somewhere in her smile she knows
That I don't need no other lover
Something in her style that shows me
I don't want to leave her now
You know I believe and how

You're asking me will my love grow
I don't know, I don't know
You stick around and it may show
I don't know, I don't know

Something in the way she knows
And all I have to do is think of her
Something in the things she shows me
I don't want to leave her now
You know I believe and how
