"Apple scruff" was the nickname for persistent Beatles fans who would literally camp outside the studio or outside the Beatles' private houses for days, weeks and months in order to get a glimpse of their idols. Some of them followed the Beatles for so long that they even got to know them quite well.

One day a group of apple scruff were waiting outside Paul McCartney's house in St Johns Wood, London as usual. McCartney was away for the day, and the fans must have been impatient, becasue a girl called Diane Ashley found a ladder in his garden and decided to climb in through the bathroom window, which happened to be unlocked. Once Diane was in, she opened the front door so that others could come in too. Unfortunately, some of Paul's photographs and negatives were stolen that day, and he never managed to retrieve all of them back.

It's likely that this incident at least partly inspired Paul to write She Came In Through The Bathroom Window. And if that's the case, then at least something good came out of the unfortunte incident.

She Came In Through The Bathroom Window

(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)

She came in through the bathroom window
protected by a silver spoon
But now she sucks her thumb and wonders
By the banks of her own lagoon

Didn't anybody tell her
Didn't anybody see
Sunday's on the phone to Monday
Tuesday's on the phone to me

She said she's always been a dancer
She worked at fifteen clubs a day
And though she thought I knew the answer
Well I knew what I could not say

And so I quit the Police Department
And got myself a steady job
And though she tried her best to help me
She could steal, but she could not rob

Didn't anybody tell her
Didn't anybody see
Sunday's on the phone to Monday
Tuesday's on the phone to me
