It was
Paul's idea to perform under the fictional band name Sgt.
Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. But he didn't think about
calling the actual album for Sgt. Pepper before the recording
of the title track.
Paul later
said that he thought of Sgt. Pepper as both a bass band
and a rock band. Thus, four freelance musicians were hired
to play French horns. One of them was John Burden.
"They
didn't really know what they wanted," said Burden in
Mark Lewisohn's The
Complete Beatles Recording Sessions.
"I
wrote out phrases for them based on what Paul McCartney
was humming to us and George Martin."
Some sound
effects were added to create a 'live' atmosphere.
The sound
of audience applause and laughter (over the instrumental
section with French horns) is actually a sample from the
play Beyond The Fringe, from London's Fortune Theatre in
1961. The sound of the audience screaming (where Billy Shears
is introduced) is taken from one of Beatles' concerts at
the Hollywood Bowl in August 1965 (when the Beatles enters
the stage).
The Sgt.
Pepper album was released in Britain on Saturday June 3
1967. The day after, Jimi Hendrix performed live in London,
and both Paul McCartney and George Harrison were in the
audience. Hendrix opened his concert with a version of the
title track from Sgt. Pepper, less than 48 hours after the
album had been released!
