Sexy Sadie
was originally called "Maharishi" after Maharishi
Mahesh Yogi, a meditation guru and central figure at the
Rishikesh community where the Beatles studied Transcendental
Meditation. After having stayed in India for a while, Lennon
lost trust in Maharishi, apparanetly because of a rumour
that the guru had made sexual advances to a female member
of the course. Lennon left India in April 1968.
It was,
however, George Harrison who suggested that John should
change the song's title from Maharishi to Sexy Sadie.
The Beatles
spent about 35 hours of studio time recording the song.
The recording was completed on August 21, the day Harrison
returned from a break in Greece. He had suddenly decided
to go away a few days earlier, on August 17, probably because
he needed break from the now very tense recording sessions
at Abbey Road.
