Paul McCartney
really worked hard to get the lead vocal on Oh Darling!
right.
Over several
days, he turned up in the studio before the others to sing
it through, but he was a perfectionist and hard to satisfy.
McCartney wanted to achieve a raw "live" sound
for the vocal, since Oh Darling! was a (successful) attempt
to recapture the spirit of the late 1950s rock ballads which
the Beatles had performed live in their pre-fame days and
later went on to record.
"Five
years ago I could have done this in a flash," he was
heard saying.
McCartney
got it right in the end though, but John Lennon later expressed
disappointment that he had not been asked to sing the song's
lead vocal.
Oh Darling!
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
Oh! darling, please believe me
I'll never do you no harm
Believe me when I tell you
I'll never do you no harm
Oh! Darling,
if you leave me
I'll never make it alone
Believe me when I tell you, ooo
Don't ever leave me alone
When you
told me
You didn't need me anymore
Well you know I nearly broke down and cried
When you told me
you didn't need me anymore
Well you know I nearly broke down and died
Oh! Darling
if you leave me
I'll never make it alone
Believe me when I tell you
I'll never do you no harm
(Believe me darling)
When you
told me
You didn't need me anymore
Well you know I nearly broke down and cried
When you told me
you didn't need me anymore
Well you know I nearly broke down and died
Oh! Darling,
please believe me
I'll never let you down
Oh, believe me darling
Believe me when I tell you, ooo
I'll never do you no harm
