On August
22 1968, during the recording of the White
Album, Ringo Starr walked out on the Beatles and took
his family on holiday to Sardinia (see also Back
In The USSR.) While in Italy, he chatted with a fisherman
who told him that octopuses pick up stones and shiny objects
from the seabed and build gardens with them. This inspired
him to write a song, which he had finished by the time he
re-united with the rest of the Beatles a few days later.
Octopus's
Garden! wasn't recorded until 1969 though, but both Paul
and George Harrison showed great enthusiasm whilst working
on it in the studio. Some effects were also added. Ringo
came up with the idea of blowing bubbles into a glass of
water, to create a similar sound to what they had achieved
on Yellow
Submarine. He also told engineer Geoff Emerick that
he wanted the vocals in the middle section to sound like
he was singing under water. Emerick created a wobbly sound
by using a compressor and George Harrison's Moog synthesizer.
And Ringo was thrilled with the result!
Octopus's Garden!
(Ringo Starr)
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade
He'd let us in, knows where we've been
In his octopus's garden in the shade
I'd ask my friends to come and see
In an octopus's garden with me
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade
We would
be warm below the storm
In our little hideaway beneath the waves
Resting our head on the sea bed
In an octopus's garden near a cave
We would sing and dance around
because we know we can't be found
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade
We would
shout and swim about
The coral that lies beneath the waves
Oh what joy for every girl and boy
Knowing they're happy and they're safe
We would be so happy you and me
No one there to tell us what to do
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden with you
in an octopus's garden with you
in an octopus's garden with you
