Even as
early as in 1963, Lennon and McCartney were already receiving
critical acclaim for their song writing abilitites. William
Mann, for instance, music critic of The Times newspaper
(UK), compared Not A Second Time to Gustav Mahlers
Song Of The Earth.
Harmonic
interest is typical of their quicker songs too, Mann
wrote, and one gets the impression that they think
simultaneously of harmony and melody, so firmly are the
major tonic sevenths and ninths built into their tunes,
and the flat-submediant key-switches, so natural is the
Aeolian cadence at the end of Not A Second Time
Lennon
later said that he thought the term Aeolian cadence
referred to an exotic bird.
Not a Second Time
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
You know
you made me cry
I see no use in wondring why
I cried for you
And now, youve changed your mind
I see no reason to change mine
I cried, its through, oh
Oh, youre giving me the same old line
Im wondring why
You hurt me then, youre back again
No, no, not a second time
You know you made me cry
I see no use in wondring why
I cried for you, yeah
And now, youve changed your mind
I see no reason to change mine
I cried, its through, oh
Oh, youre giving me the same old line
Im wondring why
You hurt me then, youre back again
No, no, not a second time
