This tune
was considered for the record A
Hard Days Night, but Ringo was ill on July 3 1964, the
day the recording of the album was scheduled to be completed.
Instead, John, Paul and George had to spend the day rehearsing
with stand-in drummer Jimmy Nicol for the upcoming tour.
A demo version of No Reply was recorded later the same day,
and this version is now available on the Anthology 1 album.
Oddly enough, nobody knows who plays the drums on this version
of the song since nobody is credited in Abbey Road's log
books. None of the staff who was present at the time can
remember who played the drums either, but apparently it
wasn't Ringo nor Jimmy Nicol.
Lennon
was apparently inspired by the song The Silhouettes, a hit
with The Rays in 1957, when he wrote No Reply.

This happened
once before
when I came to your door
No reply
They said it wasn't you
but I saw you peep through
your window
I saw
the light
I saw the light
I know that you saw me
'cause I looked up to see
your face
I tried
to telephone
They said you were not home
that's a lie
'cause I know where you've been
I saw you walk in
your door
I nearly
died
I nearly died
'cause you walked hand in hand
with another man
in my place
If I were
you
I'd realize that I
love you more
than any other guy
And I'll forgive
the lies that I
heard before
when you gave me no reply
I tried
to telephone
They said you were not home
that's a lie
'cause I know where you've been
I saw you walk in
your door
I nearly
died
I nearly died
'cause you walked hand in hand
with another man
in my place
