Mother
Nature's Son, which had been influenced by a lecture by
Maharishi in India, was yet another solo recording by Paul.
Four session musicians were brought in to take care of the
brass sections, however, but their names have been lost.
John Lennon
also wrote a song based on Maharishi's lectures, entitled
Child of Nature. This song, however, was never recoded properly
during the White Album sessions. Instead, Lennon later rewrote
the song, and released it under the title Jelaous Guy on
the solo album Imagine from 1971.
Alan Brown,
who was technical engineer for the Mother Nature's Son session
on August 20, said in Mark Lewisohn's book The
Complete Beatles Recording Sessions that the drums,
which were played by Paul, were recorded in the corridor
outside the actual studio in order to create a special sound.
"Paul
wanted an open effect on his drums [to give a bongos sound]
and we ended up leaving the studio itself and putting the
drums in the corridor, halfway down, with mikes at the far
end. It wasn't carpeted then and it gave it an interesting
staccato effect," he said.
There
was a lot of tension between the four Beatles members at
this time, which probably explains why Paul recorded the
song without help from the others.
Engineer
Ken Scott said in The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions
that he recalled one particular moment during this recording
which illustrated this.
"Paul
was downstairs going through the arrangement with George
[Martin] and the brass players. Everything was great, everything
was in great spirits. It felt reall good. Suddenly, half
way through, John and Ringo walked in and you could cut
the atmosphere with a knife. An instant change. It was like
that for ten minutes and then as soon as they left it felt
great again. It was very bizarre."
At the
same time as Mother Nature's Son was being recorded, Russia
was invading Czechoslovakia.
Mother Nature's Son
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
Born a poor young country boy
Mother Nature's Son
All day long I'm sitting
singing songs for every one
Sit beside
a mountain stream
See her waters rise
Listen to the pretty
sound of music as she flies
tu tu tu, tu, du tu
Find me
in my field of grass
Mother Nature's Son
swaying daisies sing
a lazy song beneath the sun
tu tu, yeah yeah yeah
Ooo
Ooo
