John Lennon has said his harmonica playing on Love Me Do was inspired by Delbert McClinton's contribution on Bruce Channel's hit single Hey Baby. Lennon and McClinton met in New Brighton in 1962, where the Beatles and Bruce Channel's band performed on the same show.

The Beatles did three different recordings of Love Me Do and with three different drummers: Pete Best, Ringo Starr and Andy White.

The first recording was on June 6 1962 with Pete Best behind the drum kit. Producer George Martin was not impressed with Best's drumming (this version is available on Anthology 1) and on the second recording, on September 4, the Beatles were persueded to use a different drummer. His name was Ringo Starr.

But even Ringo's contribution was not considered good enough by producer Martin. The Beatles returned to the studio a week later to record a third version of the song with session drummer Andy White (and with Ringo on the tambourine). However, when Love Me Do was released as a single, George Martin decided to use the version with Ringo on the drums.

But the Ringo-version is only to be found on the first edition of the single. When the single was reprinted in fall 1963, George Martin decided to use the version with Andy White on the drums (the Ringo version is available on Past Masters Volume One).

Love Me Do was released on October 5 1962 and made it to no 17 on the British charts. Almost two years later, in May 1964, it hit the number one spot in the US, where it stayed for one week.

Love Me Do

(Paul McCartney/John Lennon)

Love, love me do
You know I love you
I'll always be true
So please, love me do
Whoa, love me do

Love, love me do
You know I love you
I'll always be true
So please, love me do
Whoa, love me do

Someone to love
Somebody new
Someone to love
Someone like you

Love, love me do
You know I love you
I'll always be true
So please, love me do
Whoa, love me do

Love, love me do
You know I love you
I'll always be true
So please, love me do
Whoa, love me do
Yeah, love me do
Whoa, oh, love me do
