Paul and
John wrote this tune one day they sagged off school as teenagers.
McCartney had the 17 year old girl Iris Caldwell in mind
when he wrote the lyrics. He had seen her dancing in a dance
hall in New Brighton in 1961. It was love at first sight.
John Lennon
helped out with the lyrics and changed the opening line
"never been a beauty queen" to "you know
what I mean". Lennon also sang this song in duet with
Elton John in a New York concert in 1975. "A number
by an old, estranged fiancé of mine called Paul",
he said in what was to be his last performance.
The song
was released as a B-side on the single I
Want To Hold Your Hand, and reached number 14 on the
US charts in January 1964.
I Saw
Here Standing There
(Paul McCartney/John Lennon)
She was
just seventeen
And you know what I mean
And the way she looked was way beyond compare
I couldn't dance with another
When I saw her standing there
Well she
looked at me
And I could see
That before too long I fell in love with her
I couldn't dance with another
When I saw here standing there
Well my
heart went boom
As I crossed that room
And I held her hand in mine
Oh we
danced through the night
And we held each other tight
And before too long I feel in love with her
I couldn't dance with another
When I saw here standing there
