The Beatles
recorded three versions of I'm Looking Through You before
Paul McCartney finally was pleased with it. An alternative,
slower version, which was recorded on October 24, is available
on the Anthology 2 album. This version is ranked highly
among many Beatles fans, and it is unknown why the Beatles
decided to re-record the song two weeks later.
I'm Looking
Through You could be another song about Paul's fructuous
relationship with Jane Asher. At the time she had moved
to Bristol to join The Bristol Old Vic Company, while Paul
was still living in her family home in Wimpole Street in
London.
"I
knew I was selfish," McCartney later told biographer
Hunter Davies.
"It
caused a few rows. Jane went off and I said, 'OK then. Leave.
I'll find someone else.' It was shattering to be without
her. That's when I wrote 'I'm Looking Through You'."
Some claim
that I'm Looking Through You shows that McCartney also was
influenced by Bob Dylan, although perhaps not to the same
extent as Lennon was. There is indeed something Dylansque
over the song, and the lyrics are more revealing than in
McCartney's previous songs.
Ringo
was credited for playing the organ on I'm Looking Through
You. It's hard to notice the organ on the Rubber Soul version
of the song, but it's more noticeable on the version recorded
October 24 (available on Anthology 2).

I'm Looking Through You
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
Im
looking through you, where did you go?
I thought I knew you, what did I know?
You dont look different, but you have changed
Im looking through you, youre not the same
Your lips are moving, I cannot hear
Your voice is soothing but the words arent clear
You dont sound different, Ive learnt the game
Im looking through you, youre not the same
Why, tell me why did you not treat me right?
Love has a nasty habit of disappearing overnight
Youre thinking of me the same old way
You were above me, but not today
The only difference is youre down there
Im looking through you and youre nowhere
Why tell me why did you not treat me right?
Love has a nasty habit of disappearing overnight
Im looking through you, where did you go?
I thought I knew you, what did I know?
You dont look different, but you have changed
Im looking through you, youre not the same
Yeah, I tell you youve changed
