"I've got blisters on my fingers," Ringo shouted after the final take of Heler Skelter. The band had first recorded the song on July 18, but this version was more than 27 minutes long and had to be scrapped for that reason. Beatles re-recorded the song on September 9, allegedly under heavy influence of illegal substances. Lennon played bass guitar and made his debut as a tenor saxophonist on this recording, while Beatles assistant Mal Evans played the trumpet. The recording finnished after take 21, to Ringo's relief. Some overdubbing was made the day after.

Paul got the idea to Helter Skelter after he read a review of a new single by British band The Who, probaly I Can See For Miles, which inspired him to write something noisy that would "freak people out."

Helter Skelter is in fact a British term for a spiral fairground slide. Serial killer Charles Manson, meanwhile, thought the Beatles were warning America of racial conflict that was "coming down fast." He daubed the words Helter Skelter in blood at the scene of one of his murders.

Helter Skelter

(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)

When I get to the bottom
I go back to the top of the slide
Where I stop and turn
and I go for a ride
Till I get to the bottom and I see you again
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Do you don't you want me to love you
I'm coming down fast but I'm miles above you
Tell me tell me come on tell me the answer
and you may be a lover but you ain't no dancer

Go helter skelter
helter skelter
helter skelter
Yeah, hu, hu
I will you won't you want me to make you
I'm coming down fast but don't let me break you
Tell me tell me tell me the answer
You may be a lover but you ain't no dancer

Look out
Helter skelter
helter skelter
helter skelter
Yeah, hu, hu
Look out cause here she comes

When I get to the bottom
I go back to the top of the slide
Where I stop and turn
and I go for a ride
Till I get to the bottom and I see you again
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Well will you won't you want me to make you
I'm coming down fast but don't let me break you
Tell me tell me tell me the answer
You may be a lover but you ain't no dancer

Look out
Helter skelter
helter skelter
helter skelter
Yeah, hu,

Helter Skelter
She's coming down fast
Yes she is
Yes she is
coming down fast
