The working
title for the Help! movie was originally Eight Arms To Hold
You. When director Richard Lester suggested to change the
title to Help!, Lennon was inspired to write a song with
the same title.
It's a deeply personal song. Fame and success does not necessarily
lead to happiness, and it is a disillusioned, confused and
vulnerable Lennon who cries out for help in this song.
Help! was written with Paul at Lennon's Weybridge home in
Kenwwod in April 1965.
The song was recorded in little over four hours. Lennon's
original idea was to play the song in a slow tempo. However,
producer George Martin asked him to speed it up, perhaps
for commercial purposes. Lennon said in later interviews
that he was unhappy with the decision to speed up the tempo.
However, it remained one of his favorite Beatles songs ever,
because, as he said, "it was about me."
Help! was released as a single and topped the charts on
both sides of the Atlantic. It was released in the US on
July 19 1965, and topped the charts for 3 weeks. In the
UK it was released on July 23. It kept the number one spot
for three weeks also there.
Help!
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
Help, I need somebody
Help, Not just anybody
Help, You know I need someone
Help
When I
was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone
I'm not so self assured
Now I find I've changed my mind
I've opened up the doors
Help me
if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me
And now
my life hand changed in oh, so many ways
My independence seems to vanish in the haze
But every now and then I feel so insecure
I know that I just need you like
I've never done before
Help me
if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me
When I
was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone
I'm not so self assured
Now I find I've changed my mind
I've opened up the doors
Help me
if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me, me, me, Oo
