Good Night
is a wonderful Hollywood-style ballad written by Lennon
as a lullaby to his five-year-old son Julian. It was given
to Ringo to sing, however, who delivered an excellent vocal,
with backing from The Mike Sammes Singers and producer George
Martin's orchestrial score.
An acoustic
guitar, played by John, and harmony backing vocals were
recorded for the song, but never used.
This was
the second time the The Mike Sammes Singers helped out on
a Beatles recording. They had earlier participated on I
Am The Walrus. On is occassion, the singers were:
Ingrid
Thomas
Pat Whitmore
Val Stockwell
Irene King
Ross Gilmour
Mike Redway
Ken Barrie
Fred Lucas
Mike Redway
later became a radio personality in Britain and Ken Barrie
sang the theme song for the children's programme Postman
Pat - which topped the UK singles chart for more than four
months in the early 1980s.
Good Night
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
Now it's time to say good night
good night sleep tight
Now the sun turns out his light
good night sleep tight
Dream sweet dreams for me
Dream sweet dreams for you
Close
your eyes and I'll close mine
Good night sleep tight
Now the moon begins to shine
Good night sleep tight
Dream sweet dreams for me
Dream sweet dreams for you
Mm, mm, mm
Close
your eyes and I'll close mine
Good night sleep tight
Now the sun turns out his light
Good night sleep tight
Dream sweet dreams for me
Dream sweet dreams for you
(Good night, good night everybody
everybody everywhere, goodnight)
