"Good
morning, good morning. The best to you each morning, Sunshine
breakfast, Kellogg's Corn Flakes, Crisp and full of fun."
That's
how a TV commerical for Kellogg's Corn Flakes sounded in
1960's Britian. John Lennon must have heard it so many times
that he eventualy decided to use it in a song.
Good Morning
Good Morning is not one of Lennon's best compositions, but
it's still an interesting piece of production. The song
features animal sound effects, something that could have
been inspired by the Beach Boys' album Pet Sounds from 1966.
One interesting
fact here is that the animal sounds are put together in
a particular order.
Beatles
engineer Geoff Emerick explains this in Mark Lewisohn's
book The
Complete Beatles Recording Sessions:
"John
said to me during one of the breaks that he wanted to have
the sound of animals escaping and that each sucessive animal
should be capable of frightening or devouring its predeccessor!"
When Lewisohn
studied the tape, he realised that Emerick was right.
"The
song starts off with a cock crowing, then later on there's
a cat mewing, dogs barking, horses neighing, sheep bleating,
lions roaring, elephants snorting, there's a fox being chased
by bloodhounds in a hunt, with the horses galloping, there's
a cow lowing and finally a hen clucking," he wrote.
It's also
woth noting that it's Paul McCartney and not Harrison who
plays the guitar solo on the song.
John Lennon
later claimed that he had been rushed into writing Good
Morning Good Morning, and called it "a piece of garbadge."
Good Morning Good Morning
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
Good morning good morning
good morning good morning
good morning, a
Nothing
to do to save his life
call his wife in
Nothing say but what a day
how's your boy been
Nothing to do, it's up to you
I've got noting to say but it's O.K.
Good morning
good morning
good morning a
Going
to work don't want to go
feeling low down
Heading for home you start to roam
then you're in town
Everybody
knows there's nothing doing
Everything is closed, it's like a ruin
Everyone you see is half asleep
And you're on your own, you're in the street
After
a while you start to smile
now you feel cool
Then you decide to take a walk by the old school
Nothing has changed it's still the same
I've got nothing to say but it's O.K.
Good morning good morning
good morning a
People
running 'round it's five o'clock
Everywhere in town it's getting dark
Everyone you see is full of life
It's time for tea and meet the wife
Somebody
needs to know the time
glad that I'm here
Watching the skirts you start to flirt
no you're in gear
Go to a show you hope she goes
I've got nothing to say but it's O.K.
Good morning good morning
