Paul was
playing the piano at his father James McCartney's house, when
he discovered an old nursery songbook which belonged to his
step sister Ruth. In the book he spotted a lullaby called
Golden Slumbers, which had been written by the English dramatist
Thomas Dekker around 1600.
Because
McCartney couldn't read music, he decided to compose his
own melody to the verse instead.
Golden
Slumbers was recorded as one continuous piece together with
Carry
That Weight. The two songs were in fact considered to
be released as a single, but this never happened.
It's worth
noting that George Harrison played bass on Golden Slumbers.
John Lennon's input was minimal since he had been hospitalised
after a traffic accident in Scotland. He was therefore absent
during most of the recording sessions for both Golden Slumbers
and Carry That Weight.
Golden Slumbers
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Golden
slumbers fill your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Once there
was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
