Paul McCartney wrote this song while on skiing-holiday in Kloster, Switzerland, with his girlfriend Jane Asher.

The working title for the song was Why Did It Die. McCartney was listening to a lot of classical music at the time, which inspired songs such as For No One and Eleanor Rigby, both on Revolver.

Alan Civil from London Philharmonic Orchestra played the solo on the French horn. He remembers that he had difficulties tuning his instrument to the key of the song.

"They played the existing tape to me, which was complete, and I thought it had been recoded in rather bad musical style, in that it was 'in the cracks', neither B-flat nor B-major. This posed a certain difficulty in tuning my instrument," he said in Mark Lewisohn's book The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions.

"Paul said 'We want something there. Can you play something that fits in?' It was rather difficult to actually understand exactly what they wanted so I made something up which was a middle register, a baroque style solo. I played it several times, each take wiping out the previous attempt."

"For me it was just another day's work, the third session that day in fact, but it was very interesting."

John and George did not play on the recording of For No One at all.

For No One

(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)

Your day breaks, your mind aches
You find that all her words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you

She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn’t feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years

You want her, you need her
And yet you don’t believe her
When she says her love is dead
You think she needs you

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years

You stay home, she goes out
She says that long ago she knew someone but now
He’s gone, she doesn’t need him

Your day breaks, your mind aches
There will be times when all the things she said will fill her head
You won’t forget her

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years
