This simple
rocker, initially known as "Come on, Come on,"
signalled Lennon's move from psychedelic musical experimentation
towards a more back-to-basic form of rock and roll. This
process had in fact already started with the song Hey
Bulldog, and the trend would continue beyond the Beatles
era and shape many of Lennon's solo recordings.
As for
the odd lyrics, John said the song was bout his relationship
with Yoko Ono, which started to blossom when he returned
from India. By now, Lennon's wife Cynthia also knew bout
the affair.
Ono had started to attend the Beatles recording sessions,
much to the annoyance of Paul, George and Ringo.
Even at
this stage, the couple seemed to somehow islolate themselves
from the rest of the world.
"Everybody
seemed to be paranoid except from us two, who were in the
glow of love... everybody was sort of tense around us,"
John said.
