Paul McCartney turned up at Abbey Road Studios on October 13 1965 with a brand new melody and some unfinished lyrics: "I can give you golden rings, I can give you anything, Baby I love you." Lennon thought the lyrics had to be rewritten, and Paul and John sat down and wrote a humoristic, sexually charged story about a woman who dreamed about being a star, and tells her man that he can be her chauffeur; "Baby, you can drive my car."

John Lennon didn't play any instruments on Drive My Car, but he shared the lead vocal with Paul. McCartney plays the guitar solo on the track, and makes his debut on the slide guitar, while Harrison played bass.

Harrison was at the time influenced by Otis Redding's single Respect, perhaps that's why the guitars and bass guitar on Drive My Car sound very soulful.

The Beatles try to mimic a car horn where they sing "Beep-beep-mmm-beep-beep yeah!" after the choruses.

Two days after recording Drive My Car, Paul told music magazine Melody Maker:

"We've written some funny songs - songs with jokes in. We think that comedy numbers are the next thing after protest songs."

Drive My Car

(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)

Asked a girl what she wanted to be
She said "baby can't you see
I wanna be famous, a star of the screen
But you do something in between"

"Baby, you can drive my car
yes, I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And maybe I'll love you"

I told that girl that my prospects were good
And she said "baby it's understood
Working for peanuts is all very fine
But I can show you a better time"

"Baby, you can drive my car
yes, I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And maybe I'll love you"
Beep beep mm beep beep, yeah

"Baby, you can drive my car
yes, I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And maybe I'll love you" br>
I told that girl I could start right away
And she said "listen baby I've got something to say
I got no car and it's breaking my heart
But I've found a driver and that's a start"

"Baby, you can drive my car
yes, I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And maybe I'll love you"
Beep beep mm beep beep, yeah
Beep beep mm beep beep, yeah
Beep beep mm beep beep, yeah
