Ringo
started writing Don't Pass Me By in 1963, but the song wasn't
recored until the White Album sessions in 1968. The song
was temporarily entitled This Is Some Friendly, but Don't
Pass Me By was a more suitable title since it was Ringo's
first full composistion for a Beatles record (He had earlier
co-written What
Goes On and Flying.)
The country-style
violin fiddle was played by session musician Jack Fallon.
The Beatles were surprised when they saw Fallon, because
he was also a booking agent, and had in fact booked the
group for engagements in the south of England in the early
1960s.
Producer
George Martin had jotted down a 12-bar blues for Fallon
to play. When Fallon thought the recording was completed,
he started to play some random improvistion on the violin.
To Fallon's great embarassement, his improvisation was caught
on tape and used at the end of the song.
John and
George did not participate on the recording of Don't Pass
Me By.
