Dig It
was more or less an improvised gospel/blues jam, with non-sense
lyrics that were probably partly inspired by newspapers
lying around. The song has references to FBI, CIA, BBC,
B.B King (the guitarist/singer), Doris Day (actress) and
Matt Busby (then manager of Manchester United soccer club.)
The first
recording of the song didn't have any such references, just
vocal repeats of "can you dig it, yeah?," plus
an electric instrumenttion, including a slide guitar, but
this was later wiped out.
Since
all four Beatles members threw in contributions to the lyrics,
they all got song writing credits for the song. But the
idea was probably Lennon's.
Six year
old Heather Eastman, soon to be Paul's step daughter, provided
some interesting backing vocals during the early part of
the song, while George Martin shook a percussive shaker.
Lennon's
child-like voice at the end of the song says:
"That
was 'Can You Dig It' by Georgie Wood, now we'd like to do
'Hark The Angels Come'."
