Lennon
apparently got the idea to Cry Baby Cry from a TV commercial.
The lyics first started out as "Cry baby cry, make
your mother buy." John wrote some of the song while
staying in the Rishikesh community in India, where folk-singer
Donovan also was. Donovan later said that the imaginary
in Lennon's song could have been inspired by his own songs
of fairytales.
Cry Baby
Cry was partly based on the nursery rhyme "Sing a song
of sixpence," but John invented "Duchess of Kirkaldy"
and the "King of Marigold." Kirkaldy is a place
in Fife in Scotland, where the Beatles played a concert
in 1963.
The amosphere
in the studio on July 16 was so tense that engineer Geoff
Emerick decided to walk out and leave. He did not come back
until 1969, when he returned to assist The Beatles on the
recording of the Abbey
Road album.
Cry Baby Cry
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
Cry baby cry
make your mother sigh
She's old enough to know better
The King
of Marigold was in the kitchen
cooking breakfast for the queen
The queen was in the parlor playing piano
for the children of the king
Cry baby
cry
make your mother sigh
She's old enough to know better
So cry baby cry
The King
was in the garden picking flowers
for a friend who came to play
The queen was in the playroom painting pictures
for the children's holiday
Cry baby
cry
make your mother sigh
She's old enough to know better
So cry baby cry
The Duchess
of Kircaldy always smiling
and arriving late for tea
The duke was having problems with a message
at the local Bird and Bee
Cry baby
cry
make your mother sigh
She's old enough to know better
So cry baby cry
At twelve
o'clock a meeting 'round the table
for a seance in the dark
With voices out of nowhere put on specially
by the children for a lark
Cry baby
cry
make your mother sigh
She's old enough to know better
So cry baby cry
Cry, cry, cry baby
make your mother sigh
She's old enough to know better
Cry baby cry
cry, cry, cry
make your mother sigh
She's old enough to know better
So cry baby cry
