Blue Jay
Way is not one of Harrison's most memorable compositions,
but it still fits in quite nicely on Magical Mystery Tour.
The title
Blue Jay Way is actually taken from a street in Hollywood
Hills, Los Angeles, where Harrison rented a house in August
1967. Harrison was very tired when he arrived in LA, but
he had to stay awake since he was expecting Beatles' press
officer Derek Taylor and his wife Joan to visit. Taylor
had got lost trying to find the house due to heavy fog,
and was severely delayed.
While
waiting for his friends, Harrison tried to kill some time
playing a Hammond organ he had found in the house. Soon after
a new song was taking shape. Harrison wrote the lyrics with his
'lost' friends in mind, and named it Blue Jay Way after
the street outside.
Several
techniques were used in the studio to give the song a 'foggy'
feel, such as backwards tapes, "flanging" effects
and strings.
Blue Jay Way
(Harrison)
There's a
fog upon L.A.
And my friends have lost their way
We'll be over soon they said
Now they've lost themselves instead
Please
don't be long
Please don't you be very long
Please don't be long
Or I may be asleep
Well it
only goes to show
And I told them where to go
Ask a policeman on the street
There's so many there to meet
Please
don't be long
Please don't you be very long
Please don't be long
Or I may be asleep
Now it's
past my bed I know
And I'd really like to go
Soon will be the break of day
Sitting here in Blue Jay Way
Please
don't be long
Please don't you be very long
Please don't be long
Or I may be asleep
Please don't be long
Please don't you be very long
Please don't be long
Please don't be long
Please don't you be very long
Please don't be long
Please don't be long
Please don't you be very long
Please don't be long
Don't
be long
Don't be long
Don't be long
Don't be long
Don't be long
Don't be long
Don't be long
