Becasue
is hailed by many critics as one of John Lennon's finest
songs ever. It was inspired by Ludwig Van Beethoven's piano
sonata in C Sharp minor, opus 27 number two (The Moonlight
Sonata.) Yoko Ono was playing Beethoven's piece on the piano
one day, and John got the idea to reverse the chords. So
he did just that, added some lyrics and then the song was
complete.
In the
studio, John, Paul and Ringo sat down with producer George
Martin over the piano to work out the vocal harmonies. Martin
also suggested to double Lennon's guitar track with an electrical
hapsichord in order to make it sound even better. Lennon
agreed.
In the
end, George Martin worked out nine different vocal harmonies
for John, Paul and George Harrison to sing. This meant they
had to sing three harmonies each, recorded in three seperate
takes - with all three singing together at the same time.
The three Beatles refused to give up before the result was
a 100% perfect. Ultimately, they delivered an awesome vocal
perfomance.
Ringo
didn't participate on the vocal harmonies, but instead he
provided a steady beat on a hi-hat so that the others could
get the timing right.
Because
is the ultimate example of how well the voices of John,
Paul and George Harrison combined in their best moments.
The Beach Boys is perhaps one of the few pop groups that
could have matched a vocal performance like this one.
Because
(John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
Ah, because the world is round
it turns me on
Because the world is round
Ah, because
the wind is high
it blows my mind
Because the wind is high
Ah, love
is old, love is new
Love is all, love is you
Because
the sky is blue
it makes me cry
Because the sky is blue
Ah, ah,
ah, ah
