Baby You're
A Rich Man was orignally written for the soundtrack of the
Yellow Submarine cartoon film. It was also chosen as the
B-side to the single All
You Need Is Love.
The "beatiful
people" is a reference to the hippies on the Amercian
west coast, while "keep all your money in a big brown
bag" is a reference to Beatles manager Brian Epstein,
who allegedly used to keep the fees earned from Beatles
concerts in a brown bag.
Lennon
can be heard singing a jokey message to Epstein at the end
of the song: "Baby you're a rich fag jew" (Epstein
was homosexual). Sadly, Epstein died shortly after this
recording, on August 27 1967. He died of an overdose of
medical drugs. Some claim it was suicide.
Lennon
experimented with the clavioline on this song. Clavioline
is an electronic keyboard instrument which can imitate the
tonal qualities of various instruments. It has its own amplifier,
but it can only play one note at the time.
Rolling
Stones-singer Mick Jagger also attended the recording session
of Baby You're A Rich Man. One of the session's tape boxes
has Jagger's name written on it, and it is possible that
he contributed with backing vocals on the chorus near the
end of the song.
Baby You're
A Rich Man was one of a handful Beatles songs that was
recorded in Olympic Sound Studios in Barnes, London, and
not in Abbey Road Studios.
